Peter Nobel får Martin H:son Holmdahls pris för mänskliga fri- och rättigheter

Peter Nobel, juris doktor, tilldelas Martin H:son Holmdahls pris 2021. Priset, som uppgår till 50 000 kronor, är Uppsala universitets främsta utmärkelse för insatser som främjar mänskliga fri- och rättigheter.
”Genom ett livslångt aktivt engagemang inom akademisk undervisning och i offentlig debatt, har Peter Nobel bidragit till att frågor om mänskliga rättigheter och humanitär rätt ständigt uppmärksammas, inte bara inom juridiska fakulteten vid Uppsala universitet utan även nationellt och internationellt. Peter Nobel är i alla avseenden en nestor vad gäller arbetet för mänskliga rättigheter i Sverige.”
Peter Nobel blev jur. kand. vid Uppsala universitet på 1950-talet. Han anställdes i Chrysanders advokatbyrå i Uppsala och intresserade sig tidigt för vad han kallar ”humanjuridik”. Tidigt insåg han att asylansökningar inte kunde hanteras utan insikt i tillståndet för mänskliga rättigheter i länderna som de ansökande kom ifrån. Brott mot mänskliga rättigheter var ofta skäl till att människor tvingats lämna sitt hemland.
Under 1960-talet deltog Peter Nobel i åtskilliga debatter, särskilt när det gällde afrikanska länder, till exempel i samband med den stora panafrikanska flyktingkonferens som 1967 blev en vattendelare. Han engagerades därefter bland annat i frågan om repatriering av krigsfångar efter 1973 års krig i Mellanöstern och publicerade under 1980-talet ett antal arbeten kring flyktingar och utvecklingen i Afrika, bland annat i en antologi publicerad av Nordiska Afrikainstitutet.
1986 utsågs Peter Nobel till Sveriges – och världens – första ombudsman mot etnisk diskriminering. Därefter var han under en period generalsekreterare för Svenska Röda Korset och expert i FN:s kommitté mot rasdiskriminering (1998-2001).
Bland hans många andra uppgifter märks hans regeringsuppdrag att bistå överlevande från Estonias förlisning och att verka i Pressens Opinionsnämnd. På senare år har han särskilt uppmärksammat den samiska befolkningens rättigheter och engagerat sig starkt vad gäller förbud mot rasistiska organisationer.
1985 blev Peter Nobel hedersdoktor vid juridiska fakulteten vid Uppsala universitet, där han varit en flitig föreläsare, även under den pågående pandemin.
Martin H:son Holmdahl var rektor för Uppsala universitet 1978-1989. Han var starkt engagerad i frågor om mänskliga rättigheter och betonade inte minst universitetens roll. Priset inrättades 2003 till Holmdahls 80-årsdag. Efter Holmdahls bortgång 2015 har universitetet fortsatt dela ut priset som idag uppgår till 50 000 kr.
